Meenakshi Temple

South India is famous for beautiful temple. In this post i will explore the divine light of the temple "Meenakshi Amma Temple", Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India". Meenakshi Amma Temple is 2500 years old. Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple was built by Kulasekara Pandya (1190 - 1216 CE). The Meenakshi temple is located in the heart of historic Madurai City about a south of Vaigai River. It is about 460 km from Chennai the state of temples. It is believed Lord Shiva who is the creator of earth assumed the form of Sundareswarar (The Lord Shiva Married with Parvati). Meenakshi Temple is the valuable treasure of India.

During the Tiru Kalayaham festival which take place over a 10 days  that attracts more than a million devotees. In normal days about 20000 devotees visit every day. At the front of the temple you can see the more gateway more than fifteen stories tall covered in 1500 brightly painted sculpture of divine.






Meenakshi temple is constructed in 700000 sq feet of asia including two principal santuares and dozens of shrines of varying size.The charm of meenakshi temple attracts devotees from all the world . The beauty of grace of 3000 sculpture outside the temple shining in the light of attraction from centuries, Meenakshi temple is 10th richest temple in India. You can't imagine the beauty of the temple and spirituality of god. feel the spiritual waves of light inside your heart. Meenakshi temple has been constructed on Dravidian architecture that is uniqueness of South India. Dravidian architecture includes covered porches on temples, tall entry gate tower on two or more sides.




Many piller halls, and a water tank or reservoir for ritual bathing. At the south end you can see the golden lily tank whose purpose of construction is ritual bathing before believers have enter the senturies of Meenakshi and sundareswarar. There are 985 pillars inside the temple and many mandaps. It is bewildering collection of indoor and outdoor spaces, small , cramped shrines, vast halls, low and high ceilings, darkness, beautiful lights.

There is a story behind this that people basically not known. In medieval time there was a king Malayadwaja Pandya and his wife Kanchanamala. They had no child, the king offered his prayer to Lord Shiva requesting him to grant him a son, but to their dismay a triple breasted girl emerge from the sacred fire. When Malayadwaja and his wife expressed their concern over the girl,s abnormal appearance, a divine voice ordered not to fret over the girl physical appearance. They were also informed that the girl's third breast will disappear as soon as she meet her future husband. That girl was Meenakshi in the future when she met with the Lord Shiva her second half, her third breast automatically had disappeared and they got married. This temple is embellish with the divine beauty of the marriage of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar.

The Wedding Ceremony of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar is celebrated every year as " Chithirai Thiruvizha" which is also known as Tiruka lyanam ( The Grand Wedding). The architecture of the temple is magnificent embellished with Historical paintings, exquisite Murals and sense of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar Marriage.
